Copyright, International Trade and Cultural Diversity
"Augusto Dominguez - Imagen de Chile"
The International Literary and Artistic Association (ALAI), originating from the artistic hub of Paris in 1871 and founded by the illustrious author of Les Misérables, Victor Hugo, is gearing up for its annual congress on October 24th and 25th, 2024.

This year, the spotlight is trained on Copyright, International Trade, and Cultural Diversity. Santiago de Chile, the capital city of Chile, serves as the prime setting in a country revered for its trade agreements, vibrant cultural fabric, delectable cuisine, great wines, and breathtaking landscapes.

International trade is the linchpin in global exchange of copyrighted works and proliferation of creative industries. While offering avenues of promise for authors and copyright holders, international trade also evokes concerns, particularly among local creators in smaller economies. Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) hold considerable sway over the internal markets of participating nations, with recent deliberations on the Intellectual Property (IP) chapters of various FTAs, capturing the attention of authors, professors, artists, researchers, cultural industries, experts from Collective Management Organizations (CMOs), technology industries, jurists, and specialists of popular and indigenous traditions, among many others.

In an exceptional gathering, specialists and experts from across the globe will convene amidst Santiago's spring charm, framed by the backdrop of the Andes mountains.

Together we will study, explore, and delve deep into the impact of international trade, encompassing both digital and traditional realms, on copyright and neighboring rights. This assembly of scholars, creative and tech industry stalwarts, legal practitioners, authors, scientists, performers, and representatives from international and national bodies, will engage in substantive discourse, analysis, and introspection about the current state of copyright and neighboring rights in the global economic landscape alongside the pivotal role of cultural diversity within this framework. This congress underscores the imperative of collaborative endeavors in shaping the future trajectory of copyright and neighboring rights within our interconnected world.

Copyrights and the rights of performing artists have an important place among cherished fundamental human rights. These rights, which are enshrined within numerous international conventions, declarations, and charters, which from an academic, practical, and even creative approach, will be pivotal in this congress.

Welcome to ALAI Santiago de Chile 2024!
